black truffle is honored to present the first ever reissue of whirled music by max eastley, steve beresford, paul burwell and david toop, one of the key documents of the inventive and energetic scene around the london musicians collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. originally released on toop’s own quartz label in 1980, the lp features a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments and objects. part of the second generations of british free improvising musicians, the prolific scene centered around the performers heard here chafed at the limitations present within the music and ideology of improvising legends such as derek bailey, evan parker, tony oxley and john stevens. where the first generations of british free improvisers often demonstrated a rigorous commitment to non-idiomatic free improvisation and instrumental virtuosity, musicians like beresford reconnected with the dada antics of figures like han bennink and surrendered to joyful musical promiscuity, gleefully disrupting expectations around ‘serious’ improvised music through quotations (of anything from betthoven to reggae) and deliberate amateurism.

paul white received universal acclaim for producing the majority of danny browns genre-defying atrocity exhibition album. in 2016 he also released a collaborative record with open mike eagle, and began work on a slew of solo material to be released on r&s records. with a free beat tape ‘everything youve forgotten’ released in january he now returns with danny brown on two tracks that showcase a producer at the very top of his game and one of the most exciting mcs of his generation. accelerator is a fuzzed-out psych monster that defies conventions about what rap music should sound like in 2017, while lions den proves that paul white and danny brown can beat the traditionalists at their own game too. instrumentals are included for both, as well as hand-drawn artwork by paul white himself.

paul brcic (aka brtschitsch) hat sich mit seinen produktionen ziemlich rar gemacht und das ist auch gut so! denn umso fokussierter arbeitet er an den wenigen veröffentlichungen, die unter seinem namen noch erscheinen. die reflektion ep auf kriemhilds nachtkuss ist seit längerer pause eine ep, die den sinn hinter dem credo des gezielten produzierens beweist. detailverliebter brschitsch sound irgendwo zwischen house und techno, dort wo brtschitsch 1994 begann sich auf den weg unzähliger soundreisen zu begeben.

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. when promoting the release of figure-ground’s ‘ep 5’, released december 2016 it was finally announced that the previously anonymous modular duo were in fact dronelock’s alexander church and boris brenecki from ontal. so now the cat’s out of the bag it seems fitting that figure-ground should have this outing on the dronelock / ontal co-run label, shadow story. add to that a collaboration with one of the uk’s finest electronic artists and figure-ground fan, paul mac and you know you’re set for some beautifully worked productions from this trio of talent. teasing and playing with the hardware throughout the ep, they’ve stayed within the realms of techno to create mind-melting and dance floor devastation across 6 tracks. from ‘virtues values & venom’ itself that opens with gusto, before erratic beat experimentation on ‘eightfold path’, the frenetic ‘digital dialectic’, which also gets a second more staccato outing on version 2, ‘noble habitus’ with its machine-funk to the subterranean ‘nativism’, it’s obviously been an enjoyable ride and that translates to the listener.

paul woolford has been seriously spreading his wings of late, becoming omni-present by landing his tracks with ease on labels like xl recordings, running back, houndstooth, hotflush and aus music. not wanting to be shackled by genres, paul comfortably serves up a wide variety of curveballs, from the technoid charge of his 4/4 persuasions to the exhilarating warped hardcore & jungle breaks of his much loved special request project. and so it’s with welcome arms that edible usher him to our release schedule, give him the comfy sofa and let him rip it up with two havoc-inducing cuts that are already a staple in label boss eats everything’s dj sets. title track ‘chaos’ finds paul in a particularly warped mode, bleepy synth pulses oscillate wildly over a granite hard beat as a single sub-bass tone drives the brain-scrambling flurry of modular tones into overdrive. a hydrochloric synth riff settles the bed, but only until the next haul of chaotic blips come firing out of the speakers - highly effective, and possibly deranged warehouse tackle. a future classic. flip side, and woolford shows off some decidedly more soulful chops on ‘meditate . a vocal hook plays against a dubwise bass line and ascending 909 rides, as a seductive and transcendental string arpeggio creeps to the fore and demands a breakdown of its own, serving up a serious bucket load of emotion. not a dry eye in the house.
